Changes to the US Spec RNS-510 Unit
Friday, December 12, 2008 20:49Posted in category I - FLYTDIGUY's Chronicles
A few recent changes have been made to the US specification RNS-510. The new part number is 3C0-035-684 A and as of this week, it doesn’t appear as though the part number is in ETKA. Other changes are in the hardware version as HW 01and software version SW 0320.
The front face of the unit has swapped out the “MUTE” button for the more appropriate “PHONE” button. As VW figures out the most appropriate version of bluetooth that will function with US based wireless carriers and provide full functionality, it is believed that these changes were made to the button in preparation for the BT kit launch.

Will your kit that is on sale for $2199 include this newest version of the RNS510? Thanks!

Hi Edward,
Yes, it will for the MKV/B6/Eos/Tiguan version as you see in the photo. A new version for the Touareg has not yet been released that we’re aware of.

i got a verizon gzone(casio) phone. I had a motorola v3. I could get the bluetooth info in the mfd with the v3, but the gzone(casio) wont import the phone book. I had to reset the pass code in vcds to all 0000 in the skoda blue tooth to get the gzone to connect.
I can save 6 presets in the rns510, but i get a “please wait message in the mfd.
Do you think an update will help me? HW 01and software version SW 0320. I have soft 1022 i think. I have also read there is a 2022. if any of these will help, where and how do i get them. THanks mark by the way, I have a 2007 gti fahrenheit mdi with home made harness and skoda bluetooth.

Don’t use 1022 on a US RNS-510. Thats for European version.

mark,
I think Verizon might have crippled the bluetooth implementation of the GZone. Maybe thats why the phone book won’t import.

I have a 2008 Touareg without navigatino (just has the stock satellite radio). Will you kit allow me to install the RNS-510 without any problems? How long will it take?
Also, can I install the backup camera as well?
Thanks!

Hi MattinCT,
With the 08 T-regs, integration with the RNS-510 is plug & play. There may be some VAG-Com coding required, but that should be it. Yes, you can integrate a back-up camera and there are a few options available. Email me and we can go through some options.
Thanks

Hi there. I am in the process of buying a 2008 Touareg 2 VR6 that has the outdated Navigation system that uses a DVD. I would love to buy an RNS-510 but I am not sure if that works on the 2008 model. Do you know anything about that? Also, do you have any good resources as to where I can buy that and maybe how I can get it installed?
Your help would be greatly appreciated.

How well does RNS-510 install in the 2009 Jetta TDI’s?

@Kcras,
The same way it does in any VW, which is plug and play. If you want to retain satellite radio functionality, the installation is a little more involved (run a cable from the sat. radio module to behind the headunit), but that’s about all.
If you need any assistance, please let us know!
Thanks!

vdubman,
Yes this unit does work with Dynaudio. It has to be coded with a VCDS Hex Can USB dongle cable for Dynaudio. Once you code it to dynaudio you get a splash screen that says dynaudio. It does work with the Touareg but you have to get a 20 ft Sat radio extension cord since the RNS-510 has it’s own SAT radio tuner, new Backup Camera module, new Backup camera harness, and of course VCDS. Backup Camera also requires VCDS.

vdubman,
Currently, we do not have any Touareg RNS-510 units in stock. If you’re interested in getting the a new rear camera package, I can price one out, but do not stock it as a standard item. Please email me at flyt...@yahoo.com if you’re interested.

@Are you sure about this?, MY rns-510 has sirrius built into the head unit. How do I know? My sirrius unit crapped out. This requires the entire RNS-510 to be replaced. Go figure. replacing an entire $2000.00 unit just to repair a $200.00 module (which is built into the unit and is impossible to replace separately.

What is the difference between the old and new RNS 510 ? I have the one with the MUTE on the front .. i have sometimes a message that my camera is not working but it is .. looks like a software issue. Is there a way to update the software ? I have the Tiguan since October 2008 . Where can I find the updates ? Thanks

Hi, I just purchased a Jetta TDI with the RNS-510 and I was surprised that the audio quality is so poor. The high end and midrange is uncomfortably loud, so much so that listening for any amount of time is painful. The dealer ship doesn’t seem to know anything. (They had no idea about the IPod cable I found online either, which worked wonderfully btw.) How can I make this thing sound better? Will I have to replace the speakers? Also, is there any word about fixing the HD Radio implementation to receive the subchannels?
Thanks.

Justin,
One suggestion is the check and see if the ground wires were changed. Since it sounds like your Jetta came from the factory with the RNS-510, perhaps this isn’t the issue, but just a thought. Check out this thread for more info: http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=4257940

Thanks in advance!

Agent Wolfie,
The Volk-L will work, but with very limited functionality as I understand it. To take advantage of the full capabilities of the RNS-510, you should consider either the Skoda kit or the Fiscon kit.
If I can help, please let me know.

No, it does not. There are backup cameras available, however, they are not included in the RNS-510 package, rather available separately.

Unfortunately, there is no known solution for an OEM rear camera for the MKV Jetta. I am working on retrofitting a Passat Wagon camera on our R&D Jetta, but have not confirmed fitment quite yet.

Flytdiguy, maybe you can help me. I just installed a new (PHONE) RNS-510 in my 09 CC. It had a 9W2 (poor) BT, I replaced with the Skoda 1Z0 035 129 D module. Everything works after some code treaking. But I do not get telphone info on the RNS.
I DO get tele info in the DIS, control from multifunction wheel, also with radio/nav/track info. Just no telephone info or control from the RNS.
Know the secret code?
TIA pg

Does the RNS-510 also fit in the VW CC? I don’t see it on the list of compatible vehicles.
I just got a 2010 VW CC 2.0 with the factory touch-screen radio with bluetooth. I’m looking to upgrade to the Nav unit.

@Phantazm,
Yes, Absolutely the RNS-510 will work with the Passat CC. The great news is that if you already have the RCD-510 (non-navi touchscreen), the retrofit is even easier!
There’s no need for running the satellite extension cable since the RCD has satellite built in like the RNS. In addition, the dual plugs in the back of the RCD are the same as the RNS, so no need for an adapter. Only thing needed is to adjust the coding with Vag-Com and you’re set.
Let us know if we can help!
Thanks,

Sure will!
You may want to consider updating your can-bus module at the same time to ensure that there is no battery drain issue that many others have experienced when upgrading to the new RNS-510 unit.
If we can help, please let us know.

Yes, Bob, it sure will. And since you already have navigation, installation is quite easy. All you have to do is remove the trim, remove the four torx screws, replace the unit and put it back together again. If you want satellite radio, you will need to add a satellite extension cable, but that and some vag-com coding and you’re all set.
If we can help, please let us know.
Thanks,

Hello Again, My VW Jetta GLI 2006 (2005 1/2) has been with the dealer going on 4 days and they can’t get the RNS-510 to work. They think they have to change out the antenna and the satellite radio receiver to get it functional. What do you think???? Thanks!

Hey Rob,
When you say they can’t get the RNS-510 to work, are you referring to the unit not working or the navigation functionality not working?
Based on what you’ve said that they’re trying, you need a GPS antenna and you need to disconnect the existing satellite radio module, connect one end of the sat. radio extension cable to the disconnected antenna wire, then run the remainder of the ext. cable to the front of the vehicle to being the headunit and plug it into the navi. From there, you should have it.
You will also have to disconnect the compass module and of course VCDS/Vag-com code it correctly to your model.
Lastly, make sure that when the test the unit, they do it in the open air. Most of the time if they try in a garage, the signal (neither GPS nor sat. radio) will function properly as both are line of sight based.
If you have any other questions, Email me for a quicker response.
Thanks,
Flytdiguy

Do VW dealerships do VAG-COM adjustments for free? I am in San Antonio and have a 2010 CC that I would like to have coded (when my new RNS-510 comes in). I just don’t know if I need to spend $250.00 for the VCDS software or try to get the dealership to properly code my new Nav unit.

Typically, VW dealerships will not conduct VCDS coding for free. However, if you recently purchased your vehicle, you may be able to work something out. There is also the vag-com locator site, which is dedicated with other vag-com users that are willing to help out their fellow enthusiasts. You can find the site @ http://www.vagcomlocator.com.
If we can help, please let us know!

Hi Sam,
The Euro RNS-510 will not function in the US in that you will not have navigation capabilities. Furthermore, you won’t have HD radio or satellite radio with the Euro unit either. Unfortunately, there’s nothing that can be done to modify the unit to add these features.
If we can help you with a USA RNS-510 purchase, Please let us know.
